Pilsner country

Czech beer: the tasting, the brewhouse, the tub.

All Czech beer tours →
★★★★★★★★★★4.8· 4,164 travellers on the most-booked beer tour

Pilsner was brewed into existence in Plzen in 1842, and Czechia has drunk more beer per head than any other country ever since. These three carry the most travellers; the full list splits the rest by whether you want a glass, a brewhouse or a bath.

The tasting

Three pours, one glass at a time

2–3h· small groups· tastings included

Czech bartenders pull the same beer three ways — hladinka, snyt and mliko — and a tasting is where you finally taste the difference between them.

The brewhouse

Copper kettles and the lagering cellars

2–4h· cellar visit· glass at the end

A walk past the kettles, down into the cold cellars where the lager rests, and a glass drawn straight from the barrel at the bottom of the stairs.

The soak

An hour in a wooden tub of hops

60–90 min· private room· dark lager on tap

Warm water, hops and brewer’s yeast in an oak tub, with a tap of dark lager by your elbow. Prague turned a spa-town habit into an afternoon anyone can book.

Out of the city

Bohemia starts an hour past the Prague ring road.

Cesky Krumlov folded into its river bend, the silver-money cathedral at Kutna Hora, Karlstejn on its wooded ridge and the sandstone arches of Bohemian Switzerland. Every one of them is a day trip, and most run door to door.

Only here

Three things you can only do in Czechia.

Beer halls turn up everywhere. A bath full of hops, a chapel furnished in bone and a theatre that works in the dark belong to this country.

Brewer’s medicine

The Beer Bath

An oak tub of warm water, hops and brewer’s yeast, a tap of dark lager beside it and an hour with nothing else to do. Czech spa towns have bathed in beer since the 19th century and Prague made it a bookable afternoon. Most rooms hold one or two tubs, so the slots go early.

An hour east

The Bone Chapel

Kutna Hora grew rich on silver and spent it on St Barbara’s cathedral. Below the town, the Sedlec Ossuary arranges the remains of tens of thousands of plague and war dead into the furniture of a small chapel. Entry runs on timed tickets and photography inside is not permitted.

A Prague invention

Black Light Theatre

Prague invented black light theatre in the 1960s: a blacked-out stage, ultraviolet lamps and puppeteers dressed to disappear. There is no dialogue, so nothing is lost in translation, and most shows run about ninety minutes.

Plan ahead

Book these before you land in Prague.

Most of Prague can wait until the morning you want it. These cannot. They run on timed tickets, guided-only routes and rooms that hold two people.

  1. 01Bernard Beer Spa with Beer and Massage OptionA room holds one or two tubs and each soak runs an hour, so the weekend slots go weeks ahead.
  2. 02Kutná Hora, St.Barbara’s Church, Sedlec OssuarySedlec sells timed-entry tickets and caps how many are inside; arriving without one means the late slot or nothing.
  3. 03Small-Group Karlstejn Castle & Koneprusy Caves TripThe castle interiors are guided-route only, in fixed time slots, and the English-language routes fill first.
  4. 04Entry Ticket Classical Concert at the Mirror ChapelChapel and church concerts sell by the date, and the good programmes go long before the week starts.

Wet-weather Prague

When the rain comes off the river, go underground.

Prague rains hardest in summer, and every good answer is indoors: a medieval cellar with a guide, an hour in a museum, a chapel concert, a tub of warm hops. None of them care what the sky is doing.
